Horses in Horses of Hoofprint Bay can get sick, and illness is tied to care. Feed, water, and brush every horse each day; serious illness can cost you Prestige. No source names a specific illness, cure item, vet, treatment screen, or recovery time, so treat any exact "sick horse" fix as unverified until you see it in your own game.
What causes illness and what it costs
The official Steam store page frames care as "grounded in realism without being tedious" and names two prevention tools:
- Brush — grooming to avoid saddle sores.
- Hoofpick — hoof cleaning to avoid abscesses.
It also says to treat scrapes and injuries appropriately when they happen, confirming injuries are a real event rather than flavor text.
The developer's Prestige dev update is the clearest statement on consequences: Prestige can be lost through having horses fall seriously ill, along with failing competitions and competing on dirty horses. Illness is therefore not only a care problem — it can set back your progression.
In a first-impression stream of the full game, the in-game care tutorial states that horses need to be fed and brushed or they will get sick. The same player later checks each horse's daily activities and finds one still needed food and pets, showing that care is tracked per horse per day.
The daily care loop
- Feed and water every horse, every day. The streamer buys hay and grain in bulk to keep food on hand.
- Groom fully. Brush off dirt, clean hooves, and do the mane as part of the routine.
- Check the daily activities list before ending the day so no horse is left with a missed need.
Injuries versus illness
The sources describe these as separate things. The store page treats scrapes and injuries as events you treat when they happen, while illness is tied to care lapses and Prestige loss. In the stream, an injury appears after a training session — a horse gets hurt with just a cut — and the player checks that nobody is sick as a separate status from injuries. For handling injuries, see the Horse Injury Guide.
Why illness matters beyond the horse
Prestige determines the quality of horses the breeder offers, the variety of tack in the shop, and which trail rides are available to unlock. The same dev update lists ways to gain Prestige — upgrading buildings, winning competitions, caring for boarders, and having high-quality horses — so consistent care protects both the horse and your progress.
