Horses of Hoofprint Bay: Controller Support

Reviewed: · Hoofprint Bay Wiki editors

No official controller support yet. Here's the documented Steam Deck mapping and what the developer has said about gamepads.

Horses of Hoofprint Bay has no proper controller support. The publisher confirmed this at launch, and the only documented alternative is a Steam Deck configuration the artist shared through the publisher: a WASD-plus-mouse layout with a few manual button remaps. That setup is for Steam Deck, not official gamepad support, and it should not be treated as a desktop gamepad binding list.

The developer's position

In the launch FAQ, the publisher said proper controller support was something they wanted to add but hadn't managed yet because more urgent work kept coming up. The same FAQ describes the game as playable on Steam Deck but possibly needing some fiddling. Steam currently lists it as Playable on Steam Deck, which is not the same as Verified and is not a controller certification. Check the Steam store page for the current compatibility label.

The documented Steam Deck setup

These are the artist's personal configuration tips, as relayed in the publisher's release FAQ:

  1. Pick the WASD + Mouse layout

Choose the WASD+Mouse control scheme if it isn't selected automatically. Arrows and the left joystick handle movement, and A is jump.
  2. Map B to Escape

Manually set the B button to Escape. This also works for exiting buildings and screens, and for care tools.
  3. Handle lesson torso input

Lessons work with the arrow buttons except for the torso. Set torso movement to the back triggers, or use the touchscreen.
  4. Fix drag-and-drop if needed

If drag-and-drop fails, select Proton Experimental in the game's Steam settings.
  5. Tune display if flickering

Adjust FPS (60 is suggested as fine) and the in-game VSync setting if you see flickering.

One known quirk: capital letters don't work when typing with the on-screen keyboard.

What this means for desktop players

The documented configuration is specific to Steam Deck. It does not establish that the same remaps work with an Xbox, PlayStation, or third-party PC gamepad, and it does not name any in-game controller menu. If you want to play with a gamepad on desktop, there is nothing verified here to follow.
