Breeding in Horses of Hoofprint Bay is a long-term project: pair a stallion and mare, wait out a pregnancy, and raise a foal that inherits a mix of its parents' looks and personality. The official Steam store page says foals inherit a mix of their parents' coloring, white patterns and even personality traits, so plan pairings around the traits and stats you want to carry forward rather than expecting a guaranteed copy of either parent.

What breeding passes on

Foals inherit a mix of:

  • Coloring and white patterns from both parents
  • Personality traits

The store frames this as a planning decision: choose stallion and mare pairings whether you're going for looks or stats. It does not publish inheritance odds or a formula, so treat any specific ratio you see elsewhere as unconfirmed.

Traits appear on a horse's profile. In launch-window footage, a starting mare displayed "sure-footed" and "a good mom," and a boarder horse displayed "easy keeper, mud lover, and cuddly." A player speculated that a trait like "mud lover" might affect day-to-day care, but this is unconfirmed — don't assume traits have fixed mechanical effects until you see them for yourself.

The breeding station and stud services

The breeding station is a buildable structure. In one launch-window video, the player saw it in the build menu and delayed it as "not a priority" early on. The store page says advanced building stages unlock "a high tech breeding station lab" that lets you preview possible foals and sell more stud services.

Selling semen is also listed among the game's income sources. The store does not publish stud fees, so don't budget around a specific number.

Pregnancy and foal timing

The publisher's release FAQ states that pregnancy takes 8 in-game days and a foal grows to a yearling in 4 days (release FAQ). These are in-game turns, not real years — the same FAQ notes horse ages are labeled in in-game days because a game day doesn't map to a real-life unit of time.

When a horse can no longer breed

According to the publisher FAQ, horses turn into seniors at around Age 180, at which point they can no longer breed or compete. They later move to a retirement pasture, which effectively removes them from the game, and there is currently no way to disable this.

That makes breeding a race against the clock for any horse you want to pass on: if a mare is close to senior age, plan the pairing before she ages out.
