Traits and quirks in Horses of Hoofprint Bay are small personality tendencies that nudge existing mechanics rather than transform a horse. They influence things like how quickly a horse gets dirty, how injury-prone it is, and whether it occasionally changes gaits on its own even at full confidence. They add individuality and give you one more thing to weigh when choosing or breeding a horse, but they won't massively change how horses behave.

How you find a horse's traits

Traits and quirks are not all visible from the start. Check the Traits and Quirks section of the in-game library, and keep working with the horse — the more you do with it, the more of its traits you uncover. Calling the vet can also identify a horse's traits and quirks. New foals may show no known traits at all until you spend time with them.

Traits named in gameplay footage

These come from launch-window streams, so treat them as observed examples rather than a complete roster. The categories are confirmed, but no full list has been published.

Which traits matter for breeding

Inheritance is confirmed for at least some traits — "chill" was checked in-game and found to be inheritable. Beyond that, a few practical priorities:

  • Surefooted is worth keeping in your line if you jump or turn horses out, since it reduces injury risk in fields and when stumbling over jumps. One player explicitly bred to preserve it.
  • Good mom is a breeding trait by design: footage describes it as boosting the foal's strength, endurance and confidence.
  • Easy keeper saves feed but raises laminitis risk, so it is a trade-off rather than a free win.
  • Mud lover and neat freak mostly change your grooming workload, not performance.

There is no verified tier list or inheritance percentage. If a horse turns out to have traits you dislike, selling it is a normal option. For the wider breeding picture, see the Breeding Guide and Aging and Foal Growth.
