Coat color in Horses of Hoofprint Bay is a light cosmetic layer on top of breeding, not a deep genetics simulator. The official store page says foals inherit a mix of their parents' coloring, white patterns and even personality traits, and a launch-day streamer described the system as only a little bit of genetics and not super in-depth. No source gives exact color ratios, a full coat list, or breed-specific color rules.

What actually passes down

Per the store description, a foal draws from both parents for:

  • Base coloring — the foal inherits a mix of the parents' coat colors.
  • White patterns — markings such as a snip are part of the inherited mix.
  • Personality traits — not a coat feature, but part of the same inheritance pool.

Planning pairings for looks vs. stats

Pairing is presented as a choice between going for looks or going for stats. Advanced building stages unlock a high-tech breeding station lab that lets you preview possible foals and sell more stud services. Use that preview to see what a pairing can produce before you commit.

Secret coats and the horse creator

Two separate cosmetic features are easy to confuse with breeding:

  • Secret coats appeared in a menu during a launch-day stream, and the streamer reacted as if they were new to them. The sources do not explain how they are unlocked, so don't assume a method.
  • The horse creator lets you design your own horse coats, but horses made there cannot be transferred into gameplay. It is a design sandbox, not a breeding shortcut.

Cosmetic mods are not inheritance

The developer explicitly allows and encourages mods for tack and clothing, and the store page notes you can edit game files to create custom color palettes. A recolored or custom-palette horse is a file change, not a bred result. Keep the two apart when you talk about "getting" a color: inherited coats come from pairings, while modded coats come from editing files. There is no Steam Workshop or Nexus integration on the developer's end.

Breeding has a hard cutoff

Horses are aged in in-game days, not years. They become seniors around Age 180, at which point they can no longer breed or compete, and later move to a retirement pasture with no way to disable it. If coat goals matter to you, plan pairings before a horse reaches that age. See Aging and Foal Growth for the full timeline, or the Breeding Guide for pairing basics.
