Training in Horses of Hoofprint Bay raises a horse's strength and confidence so it can qualify for competitions and earn prize money. The loop is simple: complete exercises to build stats, then enter show jumping and cross country events (official Steam page). The full game released on November 4, 2026, with unlimited in-game days; the demo was capped at 25 days.

What training builds

The store description names two stats that training raises: strength and confidence. Endurance also matters for competition, but the sources do not give a stat-by-stat breakdown of which course trains which value. Treat any specific course-to-stat formula you see elsewhere as unverified.

What is confirmed:

  • Training exercises build strength and confidence to qualify for competitions (Steam store page).
  • Upgrading buildings unlocks new training courses, including grid work, rhythm training, lunging courses, and confidence training courses.
  • A Desensitization course was added specifically to train confidence, per the developer update on desensitization and personalities.

Match the activity to the horse's current level

Start with a course the horse can actually handle, ride at a trot rather than pushing pace, and stop before the horse is exhausted. In one release-day session, a player who over-rode found the horse constantly exhausted, and repeating the course immediately tired her again. The same footage shows the horse losing confidence after a rough ride, so keep sessions short instead of grinding one course.

Exhaustion and feed

Heavy training has a cost. Horses in a lot of training need more feed to keep weight on, while a lightly trained horse may not need that adjustment yet. The sources give no feeding formula or daily training budget, so plan by watching the horse's condition rather than following a fixed number.

Confidence and desensitization

Confidence is trained partly through the Desensitization course. Approach a scary object, praise the horse when it is curious, and give it space and time when it becomes worried. Unprompted gait changes now show a warning icon first, giving you a chance to correct the horse before it actually changes pace (developer update).

Personality traits also affect behavior: some horses get dirty faster, some are more injury-prone, and some occasionally change gaits on their own even at full confidence. The developer describes these as small tendencies rather than major behavior changes (developer update).

Competitions and what training unlocks

Training feeds into three competition types named in the sources:

DisciplineWhat the sources say
Show jumpingIn one release-day session, the player entered a beginner show jumping event and placed first, earning prize money
Caprilli testsListed among the features added in the October demo update (developer announcement)
Cross countryLate-game discipline for horses with high strength and endurance; sometimes offers a shorter, harder path or a longer, easier one (developer update)

One player used capriole training in the arena before heading to a show, saying it would let them compete and win money. That is one player's approach, not a documented requirement for Caprilli tests. For more on events, see the competition guide.

Prestige affects progression: it determines the quality of horses the breeder offers, tack variety in the shop, and which trail rides you can unlock. You gain prestige from upgrading buildings, winning competitions, caring for boarders, and having high-quality horses, and you can lose it by failing competitions, competing on dirty horses or without appropriate clothing, and having horses fall seriously ill (developer update).

A practical training routine

The hoof detail matters: in release-day footage, the player could not get the horse fully clean until picking the hooves. The store page recommends using your brush and hoofpick to avoid saddle sores and abscesses (Steam store page).
